In this thought-provoking conversation, co-hosts Senait Mesfin Piccigallo and Rozina Michael sit down with Dr. Misgun to explore traditional conflict resolution practices across African societies and what they can teach us about modern systems of justice, mediation, and community cohesion.

Together, they examine how indigenous frameworks of peacebuilding—rooted in dialogue, respect, and restoration—contrast with and sometimes complement Western legal systems. The discussion also reflects on how cultural heritage shapes integration, identity, and collective responsibility within immigrant and diaspora communities.

Dr. Biniam Misgun is a Lecturer at the School of Social Sciences, University of KwaZulu-Natal, where he teaches Economic History and Development Studies.

He earned his BA in Anthropology and Sociology from Asmara University and went on to complete his Master’s and PhD at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. His research explores the intersection of culture, social systems, and development—particularly how traditional institutions continue to influence modern governance and community life.

Yonas Kelea, Ph.D., has conducted extensive electrophysiological and behavioral experiments during his doctoral training, focusing on the impact of psychostimulants such as METH and Cocaine on neural plasticity within the reward circuits of the brain. His research delves into the behavior of midbrain dopamine neurons and the broader behavioral implications in animals. Additionally, he has integrated the hippocampal system into his studies, examining its role in reinforcement learning associated with addictive behaviors.
Currently, Dr. Kelea dedicates most of his time to clinical research and providing comprehensive educational services to individuals diagnosed with pervasive neurodevelopmental disorders, particularly within the autism spectrum. Alongside these primary pursuits, he engages in two part-time roles. As a neurodiagnostician, he conducts Nerve Conduction and Electromyography studies, with a focus on patients experiencing neuropathic pain stemming from conditions such as diabetes, drug abuse, or nerve/spinal injuries.
Dr. Kelea serves as a faculty member at the University of Phoenix, Bay Area Campus. In this capacity, he instructs various courses encompassing biostatistics, quantitative and qualitative business research, healthcare business utilization, and neurophysiology.
